On Tuesday, the Minnesota governor was revealed as Ms Harris’ pick, and the two appeared together at a rally in Philadelphia just hours later.
Mr Walz spoke to a rowdy audience of over 10,000 at Temple University, introducing himself to Democratic voters and the general American public.
He mentioned growing up in a tiny town in Nebraska, serving in the United States Army National Guard, and working as a social studies teacher and football coach before entering politics.
Mr Walz described his stint in Congress as one in which he mastered the art of compromise, working across parties “without compromising my beliefs”.
The plain-spoken politician appeared to go over well with the freshly energized Democratic base.
Ms Harris’ choice of the 60-year-old elevates a Midwestern governor, war veteran, and union backer who helped pass an ambitious Democratic agenda for his state, including broad abortion rights protections and considerable family aid.
The choice also reflects Ms. Harris’s desire to strengthen her campaign’s standing in the upper Midwest, a vital region in presidential politics.
