Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has strongly refuted claims questioning the safety and operational standards of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), calling them “baseless propaganda.”
In a statement shared on X, Asif emphasized that while safety remains paramount, unqualified individuals should not dictate policies in the presence of both Pakistani and international regulators. He stressed that PIA strictly follows all Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) and global safety regulations.
The minister highlighted the government’s full support for PIA’s efforts to restore profitability and expand its network. According to him, the airline has achieved an average daily revenue of Rs600 million over the past three days, thanks to uninterrupted domestic and international flight operations.
Asif accused certain groups of spreading “malicious news” intended to undermine national interests and disrupt PIA’s revival. He added that the government has invested considerable effort over the past five years to rejuvenate the national carrier.
PIA currently operates all domestic flights alongside international routes to Toronto, Manchester, Paris, Saudi Arabia, China, and the Far East, with plans to expand further into Europe and North America.
However, some flights were affected on Sunday due to ongoing disputes between PIA and its engineering staff. The Society of Aircraft Engineers of Pakistan (SAEP) has been protesting over work conditions and safety concerns.
