Dotcom, a resident of New Zealand who was born in Germany, has been resisting extradition since 2012 in response to an FBI raid on his mansion in Auckland.
He faces accusations of money laundering, racketeering, and copyright infringement.
According to US officials, Dotcom, whose real name is Kim Schmitz, and three other executives from Megaupload caused more than $500 million (£388 million) in losses to record labels and movie studios by incentivizing users to store and distribute copyrighted content.
Authorities claim that this brought in more than $175 million (£136 million) for the now-defunct website.
“The obedient US colony in the South Pacific just decided to extradite me for what users uploaded to social media website X,” Dotcom wrote in a post on the platform.
Along with the extradition, he tweeted a headline that said, “Oops, don’t worry, I have a plan.”
In 2012, Bram van der Kolk, co-founder Mathias Ortmann, and chief marketing officer Finn Batato of Megaupload were jailed along with Dotcom.Ortmann and van der Kolk made plea agreements that prevented their extradition while resulting in sentences to prison terms in New Zealand in 2023. In 2022, Batato passed away in New Zealand.
