However, since right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated, that right has become the focus of acrimonious discussion.
Following his celebration of ABC’s decision to suspend talk show presenter Jimmy Kimmel for accusing the political right of exploiting Kirk’s death to gain political points, a number of prominent Democrats charged President Donald Trump on Thursday with conducting a war on free speech.
The rights advocacy group American Civil Liberties Union compared the Trump administration to the Red Scare of the late 1940s and early 1950s under Senator Joseph McCarthy, accusing it of targeting its opponents by acting outside of constitutional protections.
