LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered all relevant departments to submit detailed reports on the implementation of anti-smog measures by November 12.
Hearing multiple petitions concerning environmental protection, Justice Shahid Karim stressed that smog levels in the city will not improve unless strict vehicle inspections are enforced.
During the proceedings, officials from various government departments appeared before the court. The Judicial Water and Environmental Commission highlighted that heavy traffic after 11pm significantly contributes to worsening smog in Lahore.
The DIG Motorway Police confirmed their department’s support for past pilot projects and readiness to assist ongoing efforts. Justice Karim acknowledged this cooperation but warned that traffic and vehicle regulation must be more effective and enforced consistently.

PHA’s counsel assured that inspections would be conducted and a report submitted at the next hearing. Justice Karim cautioned against converting green spaces into commercial zones, saying:
“If the aim is just to make money, then we might as well cut down all of Lahore’s trees — this approach is unacceptable.”
Justice Karim reiterated that strict traffic control, rigorous vehicle inspections, protection of green areas, and regulation of nighttime traffic are essential to curb Lahore’s smog crisis.
All concerned departments have been directed to submit their implementation reports by November 12.
