Lea Michele has informed theatre fans about several schedule adjustments for her role in the Broadway revival of Chess. The actress, who stars as Florence Vassy alongside Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher, announced that she will be absent on specific dates over the coming months.
In an Instagram post featuring a mirror selfie, she shared a handwritten note revealing her planned absences. Michele confirmed she will not appear in performances on December 14, 16, January 23, February 18–22, and April 1–5, including the April 11 matinee. During these shows, Katerina Papacostas and Samantha Pollino will step in as her covers.
Chess tells the story of two rival chess champions—Freddie Trumper, portrayed by Tveit, and Anatoly Sergievsky, played by Christopher. Their Cold War–era rivalry intertwines with a complex love triangle involving Michele’s character. The production blends political tension with the iconic music of ABBA composers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.
Since its first performances on November 16, the musical has received a mix of reactions. Variety described the show as uneven despite its strong vocal performances, while The Hollywood Reporter felt it struggled emotionally. Fans on X (formerly Twitter) also shared divided opinions; some labeled it “ragebait,” whereas others insisted the cast deserved a Tony Award.
Despite the varied feedback, interest in the musical remains strong. Producers have already extended the show’s run through May 3, 2026, giving more theatre lovers a chance to experience the production firsthand. Tickets remain available through the official website for Chess.
