In the play categories, A Little Life emerged victorious, with James Norton and Luke Thompson taking home acting awards.
The much-loved novel by Hanya Yanagihara was adapted for the stage to mixed reviews and headlines over its unapologetic portrayal of rape and self-harm.
However, due to strong ticket sales, the four-hour event was prolonged, and both Bridgerton’s Thompson and Happy Valley star Norton received accolades for their performances.
Critics praised Sunset Boulevard, and the number of standing ovations it received made news. Later this year, the production will return to Broadway with former Pussycat Dolls singer Scherzinger starring.
The production took home seven of the nine awards for which it was nominated, although Bridge Theatre’s Guys & Dolls triumphed in the best musical revival category.
