Leclerc had long appeared to be the winner of this race; nevertheless, for a while, circumstances intervened. In the end, though, that only made the moment, when it did arrive, better.
Monaco is Leclerc’s birthplace. The 26-year-old was born and raised on the same streets that he flawlessly navigated during the event’s three days this year. His dream of driving a Formula 1 car was sparked when he watched the race as a boy from the balconies of friends whose flats overlooked the circuit.
One year prior to his debut in Formula One, he lost his father, Herve, to cancer. Twice previously, he had started the race on pole in Monaco, which in Formula One is said to be 90% of the road to winning the race, only for circumstances to rip the grand prix from his fingers.
