Susan Clancy told the court that Lindsay had been suffering from insomnia, anxiety, sadness and loss of appetite.

The testimony is part of the defence case in a murder trial where Clancy’s lawyers argue that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors say she intentionally killed her children.

Lindsay Clancy Begged for Help, Mother in Law Testifies

Susan Clancy, the mother of Lindsay Clancy’s former husband, told the court that Lindsay had been struggling with serious mental health problems before the deaths of her children.

She described Lindsay as a “very nurturing, very loving” mother. Susan also said Lindsay was trying to get medical help and wanted to get better.

When a defense lawyer asked whether Lindsay had been interested in seeing doctors and improving her condition, Susan answered, “Very much so.”

She then described Lindsay as “begging for help.”

The testimony is significant because the defence is trying to show that Clancy was experiencing a severe psychiatric condition before the killings.

What We Know So Far

Lindsay Clancy is accused of killing her three children, Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months old, at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023.

Prosecutors allege that Clancy strangled the children using fitness bands before jumping from a second floor window in an apparent suicide attempt.

The fall left Clancy paralysed, and she has attended the trial in a wheelchair.

Clancy has been charged with three counts of first degree murder. She does not dispute that she carried out the killings, but she has pleaded not guilty.

The main dispute in the case concerns her mental state and whether she was legally responsible for her actions at the time of the deaths.

Defence Argues Postpartum Psychosis

Clancy’s defence lawyers argue that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis after giving birth to her youngest child.

The defence says Clancy experienced hallucinations and delusions and was receiving psychiatric treatment before the children died.

According to testimony presented in court, Clancy checked herself into a psychiatric hospital for several days shortly before the deaths.

Her sister, Allison Ozga, also testified that Clancy told her she was experiencing suicidal thoughts every day during the month before the killings.

The defence is using this evidence to argue that Clancy was suffering from a serious psychiatric illness rather than acting with normal awareness and intent.

What Prosecutors Say

Prosecutors have presented a different account of what happened.

They argue that Clancy made a deliberate decision to kill her children and should be held responsible for their deaths.

The prosecution has spent weeks presenting testimony from witnesses as it built its case against Clancy.

The defence began presenting its case after prosecutors rested their case.

Because the trial is still ongoing, the competing arguments should not be treated as a final determination of Clancy’s guilt or criminal responsibility.

Family Members Describe Her Mental Health Struggles

Clancy’s mother, Paula Musgrove, previously testified about changes she noticed in her daughter after the birth of Callan.

Musgrove said Clancy had problems sleeping and at one point described herself as being “really sick.”

She also told the court that about a month before the killings, Lindsay told her and Patrick Clancy that she had thoughts of harming the children.

Musgrove said Lindsay would tell her, “This isn’t me, I’ve never been like this before.”

According to Musgrove, she agreed with her daughter because she believed Lindsay’s behaviour was very different from how she had been previously.

The family testimony is central to the defence effort to show that Clancy’s mental state had changed significantly before the deaths.

What Is Postpartum Psychosis?

Postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious mental health condition that can develop after childbirth.

It is different from the more common “baby blues” and can involve severe changes in mood, confusion, hallucinations and delusions.

The condition is considered a medical emergency and requires urgent professional treatment.

In the Clancy case, the defence argues that postpartum psychosis affected her mental state when the children died.

The prosecution disputes the defence’s interpretation of her actions and argues that she intentionally killed the children.

Why the Mental Health Evidence Matters

The mental health evidence is important because the trial is not only about whether Clancy caused the deaths.

The jury must also consider the evidence surrounding her mental state and the legal question of criminal responsibility.

Family members have described warning signs including insomnia, anxiety, sadness and suicidal thoughts. The defence is also presenting evidence about her medical treatment before the deaths.

The prosecution, meanwhile, is asking the jury to consider evidence supporting its claim that the killings were intentional.

What Happens Next?

The defence is continuing to present its case after prosecutors completed their presentation.

Further testimony is expected as defence lawyers seek to establish their argument about Clancy’s mental health and postpartum psychosis.

After both sides finish presenting evidence, the trial will move toward closing arguments and jury deliberations.

The final outcome will depend on the evidence presented in court and the jury’s decision about Clancy’s criminal responsibility.

Conclusion

The testimony from Susan Clancy adds to the defence argument that Lindsay Clancy was experiencing a serious mental health crisis before her children died. Prosecutors maintain that the killings were intentional, making Clancy’s mental state and legal responsibility central issues in the trial.
