While Portuguese authorities started looking into the cause of the accident, flags flew at half-mast in Lisbon on Thursday after a famous tourist hillside funicular railway crashed, killing at least 17 people and injuring 21 more.
According to officials, the city’s other two lines were closed for inspections.
The twisted wreckage of the yellow tram-like funicular, which transports passengers up and down a steep mountain in the Portuguese capital, was seen on site. It was located mere meters from another vehicle at the bottom of the hill, where it had left the track and struck a building.
