In a shocking courtroom twist, Paul Doyle, a 54-year-old Royal Marine from Croxeth, has pleaded guilty to all 31 charges related to the Liverpool FC victory parade crash. Doyle admitted to deliberately driving into crowds on May 26, injuring more than 130 people, including infants as young as six months.
Initially claiming innocence, Doyle changed his plea on November 25 at Liverpool Crown Court. Overcome with emotion, he broke down in tears while admitting to charges including dangerous driving, affray, wounding with intent, and causing grievous bodily harm. Victims affected ranged in age from six months to 77 years.
Prosecutors said dashcam footage revealed Doyle became “increasingly agitated” before deliberately driving his Ford Galaxy Titanium into pedestrians on Water Street, turning a city-wide celebration into chaos.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Sarah Hammond described the attack as a deliberate choice, emphasizing the “unimaginable harm” caused. The jury was discharged immediately after the plea, with emotional reactions from victims and members of the public filling the courtroom.
Doyle remains in custody ahead of sentencing, scheduled for December 15-16. Judge Andrew Menary KC indicated a significant prison term is inevitable for the traumatic incident that shook Liverpool.
