According to police, Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs, 24, was shot at a gas station in Johannesburg.
Authorities are looking into a case of murder and carjacking after the perpetrators took off with Mr. Fleurs’s vehicle, according to police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.
Mr. Fleurs had competed in the Tokyo Olympics for South Africa as a member of the national under-23 team.
With one of the highest murder rates in the world, the nation has had thousands of fatal hijacking victims, among whom he is the most recent.
Based on official crime figures, there were around 5,973 reported occurrences of hijacking between October and December of last year.
