A Malaysian court had sentenced Former Prime Minister Najib Razak to 15 years in prison for a series of corruption charges stemming from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad .
It is the second time he has been convicted in one of the largest corrupt financial scandals in history. Najib, who is now 72 years old, has found guilty of multiple counts of abuse of money laundering.
The trial took place in Putrajaya after almost seven years of hearings. Najib was found guilty on four counts of abuse of office and 21 counts of money laundering.
The court denied Najib’s request to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest earlier this week. Many of those supporters gathered outside the courthouse when the verdict was announced.
Najib has contended that he had been mislead by advisors, particularly Jho Low, who is currently a fugitive from justice. He has also claimed that some of the funds misappropriated from 1MDB were donated by the late Saudi Monarch.
