The Lahore High Court upheld a three-month jail sentence and a Rs. 1 million fine on Thursday, rejecting an appeal from a man found guilty of getting married again without his first wife’s consent.
Chief Justice Aalia Neelum questioned the petitioner’s attorney during the hearing on whether a wife’s advanced age may be a legitimate reason to get into a second marriage.
“What will happen to society if women start doing this as well?” she said.
The bench emphasized that there was no excuse that could negate the need to obtain previous consent before getting married again.
The man got married for the first time in 1999 and then again in 2017, according to the convict’s attorney.
