Crane, 27, participated in two Twenty20 internationals the year before and one Test match for England against Australia in 2018.
However, he only played for Hampshire in two Championship games in 2023, in addition to two on loan for Sussex.
I thought there was so much more I could be doing. For someone my age, I have a lot of experience,” he remarked.
Crane went on, “I should be playing. Hopefully, once I get going, the team will see my value and I’ll be able to showcase my skills in every format.”
Leg-spinner Crane’s displeasure highlights the challenges of developing elite red ball spinners in county circumstances in England and Wales, where the majority of matches take place in the early two months and last six weeks of the season.
During England’s recent tour to India, the dearth of opportunities for spinners to hone their trade on primarily seam-friendly grounds was brought to light when rookies Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir were thrust into Test cricket despite having very little county experience.
