Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Chicago served as Argentina’s warm-up match for the Copa America. Lionel Messi made his first international appearance in nearly seven months.
At Soldier Field, the Inter Miami attacker replaced Angel di Maria in the 56th minute after missing two friendlies against Argentina in March due to a hamstring injury.
In Messi’s absence, Di Maria led the team to victory in the 40th minute thanks to a brilliant ball from Cristian Romero, a Tottenham defender.
“It is not necessary to take a chance with Leo,” stated Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni.
“We want to take care of these players and allow them to arrive in their best possible conditions to the tournament.”
On June 21, world champions Argentina will kick up their Copa America defense against Canada, first playing a friendly match against Guatemala in Maryland on Saturday.
Messi makes a comeback as Argentina defeats Ecuador.
