In Chilpancingo, a metropolis of around 280,000 people in the southwest state of Guerrero, Alejandro Arcos was discovered dead on Sunday. It was his sixth day as mayor.
The state governor, Evelyn Salgado, declared that the murder “fills us with indignation” and that the community was in grief. His passing occurred three days following the shooting killing of Francisco Tapia, the new secretary of the city administration.
Authorities have not made the investigation’s specifics or suspects public. However, drug cartels have killed hundreds of politicians nationwide, and Guerrero is among the states most severely hit by drug violence.
Following dubious social media photographs that appeared, authorities confirmed Arcos’s murder.
Social media photos by Arcos reveal that, after Hurricane John last month caused catastrophic flooding, he had been spending his days in the office overseeing disaster relief activities.
In the final hours before he passed away, photos from his talks with people and relief workers were uploaded to his Facebook account.
