Citing the province’s continued water table decline, the Ministry of Water Resources has resisted solarization of agricultural tubewells in Balochistan.
Secretary Syed Ali Murtaza stressed during a Senate Standing Committee hearing that installing solar panels won’t solve the area’s water crisis because of low groundwater levels.
This resistance coincides with plans by the federal and provincial administrations to lower farmers’ costs in Balochistan by giving them solar panels. The farmers’ unpaid debt exceeds one trillion rupees.
According to Murtaza, it’s imperative to stop installing solar panels in order to alleviate the deteriorating water situation.
