In a public speech on Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to switch from imported goods to domestic ones, advocating for a self-sufficient campaign at a time when trade relations with the US have strained.
“Swadeshi” or made-in-India products have been promoted by Modi since US President Donald Trump levied a 50% tariff on imported Indian goods. His followers have launched boycott efforts against Apple and other American companies, which are very well-liked in India.
“We just don’t know… we will have to get rid of them,” Modi said in a speech to the country before to the enactment of broad consumer tax cuts on Monday. “A lot of products we use daily are foreign-made,” he said.
