The three-time Grand Slam winner Murray was defeated 6-3 6-4 in the opening round of his 999th singles encounter.
The 37-year-old, who has already stated he does not intend to “play much beyond the summer,” is getting ready for what appears to be his final Wimbledon.
“I’ve had some difficult months, but right now, my ankle and back feel fine. Since moving to the grass, everything has felt better, Murray remarked.
In his opening service game against Giron, the former world number one twice saved break points before losing an early opportunity to break.
Giron, ranked 54 in the world, quickly took advantage of the situation, broke to lead 4-2 and winning the first set with ease.
Murray came back to win the second set. He had held on to love in the opening game and was ahead 40–15 on his opponent’s serve.
But he was unable to convert his break points, and Giron quickly took the lead and did not give it up.
“I’ve been having trouble breaking serves. I haven’t broken in a few games, which is often one of my strong points,” Murray continued.
