Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Friday that his center-left government would take into account the findings of an independent investigation on Islamophobia, which claims that anti-Muslim prejudice has reached “unprecedented levels” in the nation.
Islamophobia has become so commonplace in Australia that many cases are not even being reported, according to an independent assessment issued on Friday by the government’s special envoy to tackle Islamophobia.
During a media event in Sydney, Albanese joined Aftab Malik in stating, “The reality is that Islamophobia in Australia has been persistent, at times ignored and other times denied, but never fully addressed.”
“We have seen public abuse, graffiti…we have seen Muslim women and children targeted, not for what they have done.”
