A small mountain that was formerly a part of the mainland has been isolated by a new island off the coast of Alaska that was created after long-standing glacial ice melted, according to NASA satellite photos.
The island is situated inside Alsek Lake, which has been steadily filling with meltwater due to the increasing weakening of the Alsek Glacier.
A NASA release claims that two Landsat photos, taken on August 6, 2025, by the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) on Landsat 9 and on July 5, 1984, by the Thematic Mapper (TM) on Landsat 5, vividly depict the change.
Once, Prow Knob, a small mountain, was swallowed up by Alsek Glacier. Over the previous four decades, both arms of the glacier have receded more than five km, forming a proglacial lake.
