According to a senior Israeli government source who spoke with Middle East journalist Alistair Bunkall, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “desperate” for a ceasefire agreement, and the army pullback is related to current talks with Hamas regarding Israeli prisoners.
The source went on, “Everything changed” after an Israeli airstrike in Gaza claimed the lives of seven relief workers.
Israel said that the southern city of Rafah is a hub for the last surviving strongholds of Hamas and has therefore prepared a ground invasion. Among the 2.3 million people living in Gaza, more than half are seeking safety.
