KHATMANDU: A day after 19 people were killed in violent protests brought on by a social media ban, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday as anti-corruption protesters fought with police and disobeyed an indefinite curfew.
Following Monday’s escalation of protests, during which police used rubber bullets and tear gas on demonstrators attempting to assault parliament, Oli’s government revoked the prohibition. The disturbances resulted in 19 fatalities and over 100 injuries.
However, Tuesday’s protests continued unabated, pushing Oli to resign and causing new political unrest in Nepal.
The impoverished Himalayan nation, which has struggled politically and is positioned between China and India, is seeing its worst turmoil in decades.
