The ravaged enclave of Gaza burst into joy as word of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas went over the region, mired in sorrow and suffering. Journalists and survivors said they could finally breathe again after more than two years of constant bombardment, displacement, and malnutrition, but they also emphasized that the world must never forget what Gaza went through.
Under a plan supported by the United States, the agreement was mediated in Sharm El-Sheikh and calls for Israel to free Palestinian prisoners and permit supplies to enter Gaza, where famine was formally declared in August. However, the wounds are more profound than any diplomatic document can mend for the more than two million Gazans who have withstood the siege for the past two years.
