According to hospital officials, a 20-day-old infant girl who was discovered buried alive in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is struggling to survive.
She was discovered by chance when a shepherd heard faint screams coming from beneath a mound of earth after he had brought his goats to the area for grazing.
As he approached, he noticed a small hand emerging from the dirt. Police were called when he warned the villagers, and they came and removed the baby.
Although police have not identified the suspect, similar incidents of female infant abandonment and attempted murder are attributed to India’s predilection for sons, which is commonly accepted to be the cause of the country’s lopsided gender ratio.
