Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir visited Lahore Garrison on Thursday, the first anniversary of the May 9 tragedy. During his visit, he stated that “no deal with the architects and plotters of the violent protests” could be reached.
After Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was arrested on this day last year, riots broke out around the nation, but mostly in Rawalpindi, where angry mobs vandalized both public and private property, including military installations.
The army chief said that those behind the rioting and violent protests were “brazenly and shamelessly trying to twist the narrative and implicate the state in this despicable endeavour” in a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
He continued, “This mentality is the exact reason why there can be no deal or compromise with the planners and architects of this dark chapter in our history.”
According to the military’s media wing, the COAS received a thorough briefing on the formation’s operational readiness on this particular occasion. According to the report, General Munir also paid somber homage to the Shuhada who gave their life in defense of the homeland by placing a flower wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument.
COAS Gen. Munir praised the soldiers for their professionalism and acknowledged their services to the country as he spoke to the Garrison officers and soldiers at the Corps Headquarters.
