Some Nobel laureates excelled academically from the beginning. Others who talked to AFP, however, described how they skipped class, were dismissed, and expressed uncertainty about their future.

Albert Einstein, the most famous Nobel laureate, was a mediocre student at Zurich Polytechnic School, which is now ETH Zurich.

The youthful Einstein placed second-last in his class in 1900, missed classes, and preferred to focus only on studying physics.

According to the Swiss university’s website, he was the sole graduate not granted a position as a research assistant.

In 1921, Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
