Following a difficult maiden outing as the stand-in captain against Sri Lanka, Ollie Pope has turned to former England captain Joe Root for guidance on how to balance the duties of both captaincy and batting.
Pope gave his team a 1-0 lead with two Tests left after leading England to a five-wicket victory at Old Trafford last week while standing in for the injured Ben Stokes in a three-match series. The No. 3 batter, though, had trouble with the bat, managing just six runs per innings. An imprudent reverse sweep led to his second outing.
The seasoned Joe Root, who captained the squad in a record 64 Tests from 2017 to 2022 and amassed 14 hundreds during that time, is still in the England lineup despite Stokes’ absence.
