Police in India have detained a legislator who fled the country after being charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse of women.
Prajwal Revanna, who departed India on April 27, was detained early on Friday morning upon his arrival in Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore, in the southern city of Germany.
Mr. Revanna has refuted every accusation made against him.
The 33-year-old Member of Parliament is a supporter of PM Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party and is a member of the Janata Dal (Secular) party.
Mr. Revanna, who comes from a powerful political family, is running for office again from the Hassan constituency in the state of Karnataka in the south.
However, thousands of USB sticks containing recordings of the MP allegedly abusing women surfaced in Karnataka just before the Hassan election, inciting an uproar.
Although Mr. Revanna refrained from commenting on the recordings, a representative from his office said that they had been altered.
