With Senate elections inching closer, the vetting of nomination papers for elections on 48 vacant seats of the upper house of parliament will be carried out on March 19.

In order to fill the vacant seats, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has previously stated that Senate elections will be held on April 2.

The new list of candidates will be released on the 26th of this month, and candidates may withdraw their candidacy papers by March 27.

Members of the National Assembly will elect Senate members in the federal capital, with one general seat and one reserved for technocrats, including Ulema.

Members of the four provincial assemblies will elect senators for seven general seats, two for women, and two for technocrats.

There is also one seat reserved for non-Muslims from Punjab and Sindh.

42 candidates have filed nomination papers for the Senate election in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to a list released by ECP KP branch spokesperson Sohail Ahmad, 25 contenders have filed nomination papers for seven general seats.

Similarly, ten individuals have filed candidacy papers for two technocrat and Ulema positions in the province.

Seven women candidates have filed nomination papers for two reserved seats for women in the KP.

Meanwhile, the Balochistan Election Commission announced a preliminary list of candidates for the province’s vacant seats in the Upper House of Parliament.

According to a spokeswoman for the provincial electoral commission, 38 candidates’ nomination papers have been approved.
