On Thursday, Washington, DC, filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump’s administration for stationing National Guard troops in the nation’s capital, a decision that is sure to exacerbate tensions between the Republican president and the Democratic leaders of the city.
Attorney General Brian Schwalb of Washington filed the case in federal court, arguing that the army deployment is illegal and in violation of several federal statutes, and that a court order prohibiting it should be issued.
After a court decision this week declared that Trump’s use of troops to combat crime in California was illegal, the lawsuit may also result in another judicial rebuke of his desire to expand the military’s role on US soil.
