Thousands of people across the Pacific Northwest in the US and Canada are preparing to evacuate as severe flooding spreads through the region. A powerful atmospheric river continues to dump heavy rain onto rivers that are already overflowing, increasing the risk of historic floods.
US Weather Officials Warn of “Catastrophic” Conditions
The US National Weather Service warns that parts of Oregon and Washington could face catastrophic flooding, especially near the Skagit and Snohomish rivers. In Canada, heavy rain, mudslides, and avalanche threats have forced officials to shut down major highways leading into Vancouver.
Evacuation orders are active in several communities on both sides of the border. Authorities say more rain on Thursday will likely worsen the situation.
Washington Declares Statewide Emergency
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency on Wednesday. He estimated that up to 100,000 residents may soon need to evacuate. His declaration also noted that ongoing rain and mountain snow will heighten flood risks and disrupt transportation and supply routes.
Skagit County, a major agricultural area north of Seattle, ordered residents in the floodplain to leave immediately. Robert Ezelle, who leads Washington’s Emergency Management Division, said up to 75,000 people living near the Skagit River may need to evacuate as water levels rise.
Rescues and Rising Rivers Across Washington State
In Snohomish County, rescue crews airlifted several residents from their homes in Sultan, northeast of Seattle. The Skykomish River climbed above 24ft (7m) overnight, nearing an all-time record. The Snohomish River also continues to rise, pushing water against a flood wall and threatening nearby neighborhoods.
Communities in King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties are reporting numerous road closures. In Pierce County, swift-water rescue teams pulled three people from an RV park in Orting. Officials expect more road shutdowns throughout the day.
Canada Orders Evacuations as Highways Shut Down
Across the border in British Columbia, evacuation orders affect Tulameen, Eastgate, and other nearby communities. The City of Abbotsford issued emergency nighttime evacuations for more than 370 properties. Officials expect the Nooksack River to overflow on Thursday but hope damage will not reach the severe levels seen in 2021.
All major highways leading to the Lower Mainland are now closed. The Sumas border crossing between the US and Canada is also closed in both directions.
Atmospheric River Continues to Fuel the Crisis
The entire region remains under the influence of a strong atmospheric river—a long, narrow current of moisture that carries massive amounts of water through the atmosphere. Although the heaviest rain should ease by Thursday afternoon, river levels will keep rising as runoff moves downstream.
Forecasters warn that another storm could hit the region on Sunday, raising concerns about continued flooding.
