Five Afghan refugee camps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) will be closed, according to the federal government, as part of a larger plan to repatriate Afghan nationals.
The decision was confirmed in an official notification released on Friday by the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON).
In KP, camps are to close.
Three of the shutdown camps were in Haripur, one in Chitral, and one in Upper Dir, per the government’s announcement. Transfers of the land to the province administration and the corresponding deputy commissioners have been ordered.
Over 100,000 refugees had lived at the Panyan camp in Haripur, one of the biggest and oldest Afghan settlements in Pakistan, for almost 40 years, according to sources.
