Over the past five years, there have been several disruptions to internet access in Pakistan, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), with multiple occurrences happening this year alone.
The information was disclosed in a recently leaked official document and provided insight into the ongoing problems with Pakistan’s internet infrastructure, which are frequently linked to malfunctions with submarine cables.
The PTA study states that in 2024 alone, there were four nationwide disruptions of internet connectivity. A land cable outage in Egypt in February of this year had a major impact on Pakistan’s internet services.
The most recent interruption happened on June 17 and was caused by a submarine cable fault that was found underwater close to Karachi. According to the PTA, repairs are anticipated to be finished by September 24.
