A spokesperson for the Taliban said on Monday that “key members” of the Islamic State group, which has been carrying out deadly attacks throughout Afghanistan, had been apprehended. The spokesman blamed neighboring Pakistan for providing sanctuary to the group.
Since the Taliban won their war and returned to power in 2021, security has largely improved; however, the primary threat to their authority now comes from the group’s provincial branch, known as Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K).
Although the number of domestic assaults was mostly suppressed by a wide security operation, IS-K carried out a number of shootings and bombings this summer.
According to Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban administration, “special forces” have captured “key members of the insurgent group,” which was responsible for this month’s six-person Kabul suicide attack.
