Paul Mescal has heaped praise on his co-star Jessie Buckley for their remarkable chemistry in the film Hamnet. The two actors portray William and Agnes Shakespeare, navigating the emotional turmoil following the loss of their 11-year-old son.
During the Dublin premiere of Hamnet, Mescal opened up about his working relationship with Buckley, highlighting the effortless connection they share. In an interview with the Irish Examiner, he said, “If Jessie was from the North Pole, I would have chemistry with her.”
He elaborated, explaining that their bond transcends origin: “It’s nothing to do with where we’re from, but also everything to do with where we’re from. She’s extraordinary, and we aim for the same feeling in our work — a total sense of freedom.”
Mescal went further to commend Buckley’s talent, revealing that collaborating with her inspired him to see acting from a fresh perspective. “I absolutely adore her, and I felt completely safe with her. Working with her has rewritten the rules for what I want to explore in the future,” he added.
Hamnet explores the heartbreaking journey of William and Agnes Shakespeare as they cope with the death of their child, portraying a story filled with love, grief, and resilience.
Both Mescal and Buckley have received Golden Globe nominations for their performances. Mescal is nominated for Best Supporting Actor, while Buckley is up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. The film itself is also gaining recognition as a potential contender for the 2026 Oscars.
