In December 2022, Guardiola gave his explanation for why Phillips had not been included in his team for the Carabao Cup fourth-round match against Liverpool.
When questioned about the remarks earlier this month, Phillips described them as “a big knock to my confidence”.
“I apologize,” Guardiola said. “I really am sorry to him. I truly apologize.”
Phillips believes that Foden’s red card will halt his run of “bad luck.” Frank Guardiola stated that he discussed the matter with the 28-year-old, who signed a loan with West Ham last month, after he returned after a brief vacation. Foden may go on to win the Ballon d’Or.
“I did talk about that,” the City executive continued. “I never before said something here [to the media] without speaking to the player.”
Phillips’s loan stint at West Ham hasn’t gone well at first.
The former Leeds midfielder gave Bournemouth a goal with his first touch as a member of the team in a 1-1 draw at London Stadium on February 1. Three days later, he was responsible for another goal conceded in a 3-0 loss at Manchester United. On Saturday, the Hammers lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest after the player was sent off for two bookable offenses in three minutes of each other.
