After what appeared to be a collision with Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn after a free kick, the attacker from Hungary went down in the second half.
The players from Hungary were furious at the length of time it was taking the medical staff to arrive and begin treating Varga after they promptly indicated that the player was in difficulty.
According to TV commentary during the match, Liverpool player Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian captain, broke down in tears as medical personnel attended to his friend.
While Varga was being treated and the TV cameras were panning away, the Hungary team surrounded him with a shield.
It was postponed because Varga needed extensive medical attention.
Varga was eventually carried off on a stretcher after a few minutes, to the cheers of both sets of supporters.
After that, he was brought to the hospital, where he is currently listed as stable.
The Hungarian Football Federation released a statement that said, “Barnabas Varga’s status is stable. The Ferencvaros player is at a Stuttgart hospital right now. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything regarding his whereabouts.”
Varga would be “okay,” but the head coach of Hungary, Marco Rossi, later said that he would require surgery on his cheekbone.
