LAHORE: In a letter to president Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stated that police are detaining party president Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s supporters in the NA-127 constituency in Lahore, where polls are scheduled for February 8.
In the letter, PPP Secretary General Taj Haider asserted that a climate of terror had been established in the constituency as a result of PPP members being arrested by Punjab Police.
According to the letter, Shahbaz and Shahzad, employees of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), were detained for joining the PPP. Khalida Parveen, a former counsellor for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), was also detained for her PPP support. They said Parveen was arrested in a case filed against her four months prior when they called the police, according to the letter.
Haider added that, in vain, PPP’s Zulfiqar Badar attempted to get the party activists released by contacting high-ranking officials. If the police were not stopped, he believed that the measures that were fascist might spread.
The PPP leader asked the CEC to order the release of his party’s members and to take appropriate legal action against those who do so.As his party’s nominee for prime minister, Bilawal is running from NA-127 Lahore, where he will face off against PML-N leader Shaista Pervaiz Malik and a candidate supported by the PTI.
