KATHMANDU: According to his team and expedition organizer, Poland’s Andrzej Bargiel became the first climber to ski down the highest peak in the world without the use of oxygen, on Thursday.
On Monday, Bargiel reached the summit of 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) Mount Everest and skimmed down its snow-covered slopes.
Bargiel made the statement, “I am on top of the highest mountain in the world and I’m going to descend it on skis,” in an early Thursday Instagram video.
There have been a few ski descents on Everest, but none that have been continuous without the addition of oxygen.
Davorin Karnicar, a Slovenian, used bottled oxygen to make the first entire ski descent from the summit of Everest to base camp in 2000.
