Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Pope Leo Warns AI Could

Pope Leo has delivered a strong message about the future of artificial intelligence. In his first major teaching document, he warned that AI could harm humanity if world leaders and tech companies fail to control it responsibly.

The Pope said modern technology may create “new digital slaveries.” He explained that people could face exploitation through AI systems, unfair labor practices, and powerful technologies controlled by a small group of companies.

AI Could Create “Digital Slavery”

The new document, titled Magnifica Humanitas, focuses on the risks and responsibilities linked to artificial intelligence.

Pope Leo compared today’s AI revolution to painful moments in history when societies ignored human suffering. He said the world must avoid repeating mistakes connected to slavery and exploitation.

The Pope also apologized for the Catholic Church’s historical role in slavery. He expressed deep sorrow for the suffering endured by millions of people in the past.

According to the Vatican, societies often recognize the dangers of exploitation too late. The Pope warned that AI could increase inequality if governments fail to act now.

Pope Warns Against AI Powered Warfare

One of the strongest sections of the document focused on war and military technology.

Pope Leo criticized the use of AI in weapons and military systems. He warned that automated warfare could make violence easier and more dangerous.

He stated that no algorithm can make war morally acceptable. The Pope added that AI systems may reduce human control during conflict and turn victims into simple data points.

The document also warned about a possible AI arms race between countries. According to the Pope, this competition could threaten global peace and stability.

Tech Companies Face Ethical Questions

The Vatican directly addressed technology companies and AI developers.

Pope Leo said developers carry ethical responsibilities because every AI system reflects human choices and values. He urged companies to place human dignity above profit and competition.

During the Vatican presentation, Christopher Olah said AI raises questions that go far beyond the technology industry.

The Pope also warned about misinformation created through AI generated videos, images, and online content. He said manipulated content could influence politics and public opinion.

Vatican Calls for Responsible AI Development

The Vatican plans to continue discussions about artificial intelligence through a special commission created by Pope Leo.

Many experts believe the document could influence future debates about AI ethics, regulation, and human rights. Although the Vatican cannot regulate technology directly, its message may shape global conversations about responsible AI development.

The Pope’s message highlights a growing concern shared by many experts worldwide. Artificial intelligence offers major benefits, but it also carries serious risks if leaders ignore ethical responsibilities.

Previous Article Trump’s Greenland Envoy Faces Tough Challenge During Visit to Nuuk US Envoy Jeff Landry Tries to Build Relations in Greenland President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, has started his first official trip to the Arctic island with the goal of improving relations and strengthening communication with local leaders. Landry arrived in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, on Monday and described his visit as a friendly mission focused on listening, learning, and creating stronger connections. He said President Trump encouraged him to visit Greenland and “make friends” with the people there. However, the visit has already created political tension. Many Greenlanders remain uncomfortable with the United States’ growing interest in the territory. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, once again stated that Greenland is “not for sale” and stressed that Greenlanders have the right to decide their own future. Diplomatic Tensions Continue Between the US and Greenland Landry’s trip comes months after President Donald Trump sparked controversy by suggesting the United States could take control of Greenland by force if necessary. Greenland is a self governing territory connected to Denmark, and the comments created concern among both Danish and Greenlandic officials. Although Landry insists the visit is peaceful and focused on cooperation, some residents have reacted coldly because the trip was not officially invited by Greenland’s government. During the visit, Landry attended a business summit and participated in the opening ceremony of a new US consulate building in Nuuk. He also met local business leaders and political figures to discuss future cooperation. Greenland Rejects US Influence Over Health Plans An American doctor also joined Landry’s delegation. The doctor told local media he wanted to examine Greenland’s healthcare needs. This move quickly drew criticism from Greenland’s Health Minister, Anna Wangenheim, who called the situation “deeply problematic.” Earlier this year, Trump proposed sending a US hospital ship to Greenland, but Greenlandic leaders rejected the offer immediately. Greenland’s Foreign Minister, Mute Egede, warned that the United States still appears interested in gaining influence over the territory. He explained that Greenland has clear limits regarding its independence and sovereignty, while America’s position has also remained unchanged. Greenland Maintains Strong Position on Independence Despite the tension, Greenlandic officials described the meeting with Landry and US Ambassador Ken Howery as respectful and professional. Prime Minister Nielsen said discussions were held in a positive atmosphere, but he made it clear that Greenland would continue formal negotiations only through official diplomatic channels. The visit highlights the ongoing political struggle surrounding Greenland’s strategic importance in the Arctic region. While the United States wants stronger influence in the area, Greenland continues to defend its independence and right to self determination.
