Major General (Rtd) Hafeezur Rehman, the chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), made it clear that the federal government is the only entity with the authority to stop the social media site “X,” which was formerly known as Twitter.
Informal interviews with media revealed that “X” would reopen as soon as the government issued the order. In Pakistan, the platform has received a lot of complaints; the Sindh High Court is currently hearing the site’s case.
In response to questions about internet outages, the Chairman pointed out that Pakistan saw only seven internet outages in 2023, compared to 116 in India. He highlighted that while the PTA does not support internet shutdowns, national security remains a concern.
The Chairman further mentioned that mobile services were not available on the 10th of Muharram, Ashura.
