ISLAMABAD: Gohar Ali Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), urged on Saturday that Imran Khan, the party’s founder, be released immediately in response to a court ruling clearing him and his wife Bushra Bibi in the iddat case.
Gohar’s comments coincide with the former premier and his spouse’s acquittal in the unlawful nikah case by a district and sessions court, which cleared the final obstacle to Khan’s release from custody.
“There was no foundation for this case. “The PTI head, flanked by party members celebrating Khan’s acquittal, requested that Bushra Bibi be released today since he is not guilty in any other case.
The couple’s requests to have their conviction in the iddat case revoked were accepted by the court. Muhammad Afzal Majoka, the Additional Sessions Judge, declared a short order reserved earlier in the day.
In February of this year, Khan and Bushra were given a seven-year prison sentence along with a Rs. 500,000 fine apiece. This came about because a trial court had declared their nikah to be phony after Bushra’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka, petitioned the court to dissolve the couple’s marriage.
The couple subsequently contested their conviction and even filed a motion with the IHC asking the court for various forms of relief.
The former prime minister and his spouse should be released right away if their arrest is not necessary in any other situation, the court ruled in its ruling.
The decision is significant for Khan, who was condemned in several instances before to the elections on February 8 and has been detained since August of last year after being found guilty in the Toshakhana criminal case.
In the £190 million reference, Toshakhana, and cipher instances, Khan has already obtained relief.
In multiple May 9 charges that were filed in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad, Khan has also been granted bail. But earlier this week, a Lahore anti-terrorism court (ATC) rejected him pre-arrest bail in vandalism cases pertaining to the violent riots from the previous year.
