In a dramatic turn of events, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Saifullah Abro resigned from the Senate on Monday after casting his vote in favor of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which focuses on reforms in the military and judiciary.
Addressing the Senate, Abro clarified, “I came here to vote for Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, not for anyone else.” He praised the Pakistan Army for its recent victory over India in May and highlighted the unprecedented diplomatic recognition by US President Donald Trump for Field Marshal Munir, surpassing the respect shown to any previous prime minister.
The amendment passed amid an opposition walkout. Alongside government members, Abro, the Awami National Party (ANP), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Senator Ahmed Khan supported the bill.
Abro’s resignation stems from potential disqualification for defying party policy and his disappointment over a lack of support from PTI colleagues during past personal hardships. He revealed that during the 26th Constitutional Amendment, ten members of his family, including his wife, were arrested, and he received no backing from his party.
Meanwhile, JUI-F expelled Senator Ahmed Khan for voting against the party line and urged him to step down from his Senate seat immediately.
