ISLAMABAD: The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) on Saturday selected Mahmood Khan Achakzai, chairman of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), as their presidential candidate.
The SIC announced its decision today, nominating Achakzai to run for the top constitutional position against Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, who is a joint candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other political parties in the coalition set to form a government at the Centre.
Achakzai was elected to the National Assembly from the Balochistan constituency of Kila Abdullah-cum-Chaman (NA-266).
PTI founder Imran Khan, who is imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Prison, has asked his party’s lawmakers to vote for the veteran politician.
Barrister Gohar Khan, the chairman of the PTI, has confirmed Achakzai’s nomination for president.
