Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, passed away on Thursday of last week after suffering serious injuries as a result of a supposed land dispute in Kenya.
Her suspected attacker and ex-partner, Dickson Ndiema, passed away on Monday night in the intensive care unit where he was hospitalized following his own injuries during the incident.
It was treated at the same facility as Ms. Cheptegei, the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
While Ndiema reportedly sustained burns over 30% of her body, Ms. Cheptegei suffered burns to 80% of her body.
He was charged with purchasing a can of gasoline, dousing her in it, and lighting her on fire after a fight.
Before the fire started, the couple was heard fighting over the property where the house was erected, according to a report submitted by the local chief.
Ms. Cheptegei recently participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics marathon, placing 44th.
Her presence, according to the president of the International Olympic Committee, served as “inspiration”.
After the horrific attack against Rebecca Cheptegei, we were startled and grieved to hear of her passing. Thomas Bach expressed his satisfaction, happiness, and motivation over Rebecca’s participation in the Paris 2024 women’s marathon.
