According to current and former US officials, US President Donald Trump’s plan to re-occupy Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base might turn into a re-invasion of the nation, necessitating the deployment of sophisticated air defenses and more than 10,000 troops.
During his trip to London, Trump told reporters Thursday that “we want that base back” and mentioned what he described as its vital location close to China.
“It’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” Trump stated.
In the two decades of war that followed the al Qaeda attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, the expansive airport served as the primary base for American forces in Afghanistan.
