After winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was photographed eating a piece of soil from the field, which went viral on social media and sparked a variety of remarks from online users.
At Kensington Oval stadium in Bridgetown, Barbados, West Indies, on June 29, India defeated South Africa by seven runs to break their 11-year ICC trophy drought.
In the midst of rumors regarding Sharma’s motivation for eating the dirt during the win celebration, the skipper has provided an explanation.
During an interview with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he expressed that he was trying to live in the moment and that it was difficult to explain, but that whatever was coming out was honest.
Since nothing was preplanned, I doubt I could adequately express it. We played on that specific pitch and won the game on that specific ground, so whatever was innately coming out, I was sensing that moment when I went to the pitch,” he remarked.
Sharma stated that he wanted to have something with the stadium and pitch because they were so important to them in winning their World Cup final match here.
“That pitch and that ground will always be a part of my memory. I therefore desired to carry a portion of it with me.
Indeed, they were truly unique times when all of our aspirations came true.
