When a significant treaty ends, Russia promised Monday to continue adhering to nuclear warhead limits agreed upon with the US, but only for a year and only if Washington did the same.
The New START pact, which was agreed in 2010, is the final significant arms proliferation deal between the two nuclear powers and restricts the number of nuclear weapons that each side may deploy.
Neither party has consented to an extension, and it is scheduled to expire on February 5, 2026.
According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, “Russia is prepared to continue adhering to the central quantitative limitations of the New START Treaty for one year after February 5, 2026,” during a meeting that was shown on television.
